Electron and native are not a branding difference
Front’s desktop app is Electron: Chromium plus the same web interface in a window. That is a reasonable engineering decision for a company shipping to Mac, Windows and the web at once, and it has costs the user pays.
- Memory and launch. An entire browser engine loads before the first conversation renders.
- System behaviour. Text substitution, services, keyboard navigation and the share sheet either work because the app reimplemented them or they do not.
- Offline.A web app in a window is still a web app. Moorline’s data is a local database file, so a plane with no wifi is a normal working session.
Moorline is written in Swift against macOS directly, using system controls, system materials and system colours. It is not a better idea than Electron in general. It is a better idea when you only ship to one platform and can afford to belong to it.
