A Zendesk alternative for founders who are the whole support department

Zendesk is very good at the thing it does, which is running a support organisation. If the organisation is one person, almost all of it is machinery with no job.

The real cost of one Zendesk agent

Zendesk plan pricing compared with Moorline for one person
PlanPer agent/moWhat it is
Zendesk Support Team$19Email ticketing only. No chat, no voice, no automation depth.
Zendesk Suite Team$55The product most reviews and comparisons are describing.
Zendesk Suite Professional$115SLAs, skills-based routing, advanced reporting.
Advanced AI add-on+$50Stacked on top of any of the above, per agent.
Moorline$9One person, native Mac, your own mailbox. No seats.

The ticket is the mismatch, not the price

A ticket exists to be a unit of work that can be handed between people: assigned, escalated, reassigned, reported on, closed against a target. That model earns its complexity the moment two people share a queue.

When one person does everything, the ticket stops describing anything real. You never hand work over, so the fields that record the handover are dead weight, and the status that matters most is one no ticket system has: whether the person who wrote in has been told what happened.

  • A ticket can be “solved” while the customer has heard nothing.
  • A ticket can be open for a week because you are waiting on them, not the reverse.
  • A ticket says nothing about whether this person pays you $9 or $900 a year.

Moorline replaces the ticket with two questions it can actually answer: is the work done, and does the customer know. Four states come out of that, and only one of them removes someone from your list.

Setup, honestly compared

Zendesk asks you to point your support address at their system, define groups, build views, write triggers and automations, and choose a plan before you know which fields you need. That investment pays back across a team.

Moorline asks for a mailbox address, an app password, an IMAP host and an SMTP host, and verifies the connection before saving anything. Optionally a read-only Stripe key, so each conversation shows who is paying you and since when. Nothing changes about your MX records and your existing mail app keeps working, because Moorline reads the mailbox rather than intercepting it.

Questions people actually ask

Is Zendesk overkill for a solo founder?

Almost always, yes. Zendesk is built for support organisations: routing rules, SLA policies, agent workload reporting, escalation tiers and a voice channel. Every one of those exists to divide work between people. With one person there is nothing to divide, so you are configuring and paying for machinery that has no job.

How much does Zendesk actually cost for one agent?

Support Team, the ticketing-only plan, is $19 per agent per month on annual billing. The Suite that most people mean when they say Zendesk starts at $55 per agent per month, and the Advanced AI add-on is around $50 per agent per month on top. Moorline is $9 a month flat.

Can I move off Zendesk without losing my history?

Zendesk can export your tickets, and you should take that export before cancelling. Worth noting for the future: Moorline never creates this problem, because it reads your own IMAP mailbox rather than storing conversations itself. The history stays with your mail host whether you keep using Moorline or not.

What does Moorline not do that Zendesk does?

Ticket routing, assignment, roles, SLA policies, a customer portal, live chat, voice, macros across a team, and reporting on anyone but you. If you need any of those, Zendesk is the right tool and Moorline is not a substitute for it.
