Zendesk alternatives, paired with the Zendesk plan they replace

The Zendesk most people mean is the Suite, and the Suite is usually the price being left. So each alternative here is matched to the Zendesk rung it stands in for, and priced for one, three or ten people. Prices checked on 27 September 2026.

What Zendesk does best, and who should stay

A full customer-service platform: ticketing, routing, SLAs, reporting, voice, and a workforce to run it. The Suite is where that platform lives, and each rung adds a layer:

  • Suite Team, $55 per agent: Messaging and live chat, AI agents, telephony and omnichannel routing.
  • Suite Professional, $115: SLAs, skills-based routing, IVR, AI writing tools, 10 AI resolutions per agent a month.

If your agents use those together, Zendesk is doing its job, and every option below replaces a part of it rather than the whole. If you are on Support Team, price is a weak reason to move: at $19 per agent, only Zoho Desk and Missive start lower. Every rung, both billing periods and the add-ons are on Zendesk pricing.

Which Zendesk are you leaving?

Each Zendesk rung buys something different, so the right replacement depends on which one is on your invoice. Prices per seat per month, yearly billing.

Each Zendesk plan, what it buys, and the alternatives that replace it
Zendesk planWhat it buysClosest replacements
Support Team, $19Email ticketing only, 5 AI resolutions per agent a month. No messaging or live chat.Freshdesk Growth at $19, Zoho Desk Express at $7 for up to 5 users, Missive Starter at $14, Help Scout Standard at $25 or its free plan.
Suite Team, $55Messaging and live chat, AI agents, telephony and omnichannel routing.Zoho Desk Standard at $14 for live chat, with telephony from Professional at $23. Intercom Essential at $29 for an in-product messenger. Front Professional at $65 for omnichannel in a shared inbox.
Suite Professional, $115SLAs, skills-based routing, IVR, AI writing tools, 10 AI resolutions per agent a month.Freshdesk Pro at $55 for SLA policies and intelligent routing. Hiver Pro at $55 for SLAs inside Gmail. Zoho Desk Enterprise at $40 for skill-based assignment.

No row replaces a rung line for line: IVR, for one, appears only in Zendesk’s list. Find the feature your team actually uses, because that feature, not the plan name, is what has to move.

What a year costs, by the rung you are replacing

Replacing the Suite

What Zendesk and Zoho Desk and Intercom and Freshdesk and Hiver and Front cost per year on yearly billing, by team size
Plan, per year1 person3 people10 people
Zoho Desk Standard$168$504$1,680
Intercom Essential$348$1,044$3,480
Zoho Desk Enterprise$480$1,440$4,800
Zendesk Suite Team$660$1,980$6,600
Freshdesk Pro$660$1,980$6,600
Hiver ProNot offered$1,980$6,600
Front Professional$780$2,340$7,800
Zendesk Suite Professional$1,380$4,140$13,800

This is where leaving saves real money. A team of 3 pays $1,980 a year for Suite Team; Zoho Desk Standard, which has live chat, is $504, and Intercom Essential is $1,044 in seats before any Fin outcomes.

Replacing Support Team

What Zendesk and Freshdesk and Zoho Desk and Missive and Help Scout and Hiver and Front cost per year on yearly billing, by team size
Plan, per year1 person3 people10 people
Zoho Desk Express$84$252Not offered
Missive Starter$168$504Not offered
Zendesk Support Team$228$684$2,280
Freshdesk Growth$228$684$2,280
Help Scout Standard$300$900$3,000
Hiver GrowthNot offered$900$3,000
Front Starter$300$900$3,000

The gaps are smaller here. For 3 people, Support Team is $684 a year, Zoho Desk Express $252 and Missive Starter $504. “Not offered” means the plan’s seat limits rule that team size out.

Seats only, on yearly billing. Zendesk, Intercom, Help Scout and Freshdesk also bill AI by use, covered under each option below. Moorline is in neither table because it has no seats to multiply: one person, $9 a month, $108 over a year.

Each alternative, and who should pick it

1. Zoho Desk: the most help desk for the least money

Best at: A conventional ticketing help desk, priced well below its rivals and bundled into an unusually wide suite of business software. Standard, at $14, is the rung that matters to a Zendesk team. Unlimited users, 5 channels, knowledge base, live chat and 5 workflow rules per module. The free plan has no end date. Free for up to 3 users on one email channel. And AI does not add a meter. Generative AI uses your own OpenAI key. No per-resolution fee.

The catch: Express caps you at 5 users and a single workflow rule, and leaves out the knowledge base, live chat and extra channels that the Standard plan at $14 adds. Multi-department routing starts at Professional, $23. Like Zendesk, it wants your support address forwarded into its inbox, and it is web only.

Pick it if you want to keep a ticketing help desk and cut the bill, especially if the Suite feature you use is live chat. The Zendesk vs Zoho Desk comparison sets both ladders side by side.

2. Freshdesk: the closest like-for-like

Best at: A conventional ticketing help desk with a generous entry price and a deep feature list above it. Growth, at $19, is ticketing with automations and one SLA policy, where Support Team has no SLAs at all. Pro, at $55, adds multiple SLA policies, intelligent routing and custom dashboards. On Zendesk, SLAs start at Suite Professional.

The catch: Prices rose in 2026: Growth from $15 to $19, Pro from $49 to $55 and Enterprise from $79 to $89 on annual billing. Freshworks’ own page description still says "starts at $15". The permanent free plan ended on 9 June 2025, replaced by the 6-month free program. Copilot is an add-on. Freddy AI Copilot: $29 per agent a month on annual billing, $35 monthly, Pro and Enterprise only.

Pick it if your support is mostly email tickets and you want service rules on a smaller budget. The rung-by-rung view is in Zendesk vs Freshdesk.

3. Help Scout: email that does not feel like tickets

Best at: A shared inbox for support teams who want their replies to look like ordinary email rather than tickets. It also has a genuine free plan. Free for up to 5 users, 1 inbox, 1 Docs site and 100 contacts helped a month, with no AI tools.

The catch: Standard is $25 per user, above Support Team’s $19. Standard has no AI drafts or summaries, basic workflows only, no round robin and no Salesforce, Jira or HubSpot integration. AI is billed by result. AI Answers: $0.75 per resolution, with a monthly spending cap available. Your address is forwarded into Help Scout’s inbox, as with Zendesk.

Pick it if you are a small team answering email and want the free plan, or want customers to receive replies that read like ordinary mail.

4. Missive: a shared inbox on your own mailbox

Best at: A shared inbox and team chat in one app, built around drafting replies collaboratively. It connects your existing mailbox over IMAP instead of asking you to forward it, and it has an Electron desktop app for Mac and Windows.

The catch: Starter caps you at 5 users and leaves out rules, integrations and API access, which is most of what people upgrade for. Those arrive on Productive at $24. It is a shared inbox rather than a ticketing desk, so moving from Zendesk means leaving the ticket model behind, not rebuilding it.

Pick it if your team answers email and would rather keep its mailbox where it is.

5. Intercom: when the channel is chat

Best at: A messaging-first support platform built around an in-app chat widget and the Fin AI agent. Essential, at $29 a seat against Suite Team’s $55, includes a shared inbox, the Fin AI agent, a messenger and a basic help centre.

The catch: The seat price is the floor, not the bill. Fin resolutions are charged per outcome on top of it. Fin AI agent: $0.99 per outcome, which counts a resolution, a completed procedure or a handoff. In September 2026 Intercom was testing a lower Essential price ($19 on annual billing) with some visitors, so the price you see may differ from the list price here.

Pick it if your customers write to you from inside your product and you are replacing the Suite’s messaging, not its ticketing.

6. Hiver: a shared inbox inside Gmail

Best at: Meeting a Gmail team where it already works. Growth, at $25 a user, puts a shared inbox inside Gmail or Hiver’s own web app, with AI agents, a copilot and rules included. Pro, at $55, adds SLAs, CSAT and a customer portal.

The catch: Growth has no customer portal, no SLAs, no CSAT and no API access. Every plan has a minimum of 2 users, so it is not an option for one person. Hiver replaced its earlier plan line-up with Growth, Pro and Elite, and the free plan left its pricing page in September 2026.

Pick it if your team runs on Google Workspace and does not want another app to open.

7. Front: drafting together, at a price

Best at: A collaborative inbox where a team drafts, comments on and assigns replies together in real time. Professional, at $65, adds omnichannel, macros, more workspaces and SSO.

The catch: Starter caps the team at 10 seats and one channel type, and leaves out macros, advanced analytics, extra workspaces and SSO. Professional is $65 a seat against Suite Team’s $55, so moving to it is a decision about how the team works, not about the bill.

Pick it if several people draft, review and assign replies together, and that is the part of support you want to get better.

8. Moorline: only if the team is one person

Best at: One person answering their own customers on a Mac. It reads the mailbox you already have (Gmail or Google Workspace, iCloud, Fastmail, Zoho Mail or another IMAP host), replies from your own address, and keeps each customer on a list until the work is handled and they have been told. Snippets and optional read-only Stripe context come with it, at $9 a month flat with no per-resolution charge.

The catch: It is for one person and nothing else: no seats, no shared inbox, no assignment and no chat widget. It does not connect to Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com mail, it needs macOS 15 or later, and there is no free plan or trial, only a 30-day refund.

Pick it if the Zendesk account has one agent and it is you. The honest case, including where Zendesk still wins, is in the Zendesk alternative for solo founders.

Questions people ask

What is the best alternative to Zendesk?

It depends on which Zendesk you are leaving. For email ticketing, Freshdesk is the closest match: Growth costs the same $19 an agent as Support Team. To replace the Suite's live chat for less, Zoho Desk Standard is $14 against $55 for Suite Team. For email that reads like email, Help Scout. For chat inside your product, Intercom. For one person answering their own customers, none of them: Moorline is $9 a month.

What is cheaper than Zendesk?

Zoho Desk, at every published rung: Express is $7 per agent for up to 5 users, and Standard, which includes live chat, is $14. Missive Starter is $14 per user for a shared inbox. The bigger saving is against the Suite: a team of 3 pays $1,980 a year for Zendesk Suite Team and $504 for Zoho Desk Standard. All prices on yearly billing.

Is there a free alternative to Zendesk?

Zendesk's own offer is a trial: 14 days of Suite Professional with Copilot. No free plan. Two alternatives have a free plan with no end date. Help Scout: Free for up to 5 users, 1 inbox, 1 Docs site and 100 contacts helped a month, with no AI tools. Zoho Desk: Free for up to 3 users on one email channel. Freshdesk's is a time-limited program: Free for up to 2 agents for the first 6 months, switched on from inside an account.

Is Freshdesk better than Zendesk?

For email ticketing on a smaller budget, often yes. Its entry plan already has an SLA policy, and multiple SLA policies with intelligent routing arrive at Pro for $55 per agent, where Zendesk's SLAs start at Suite Professional for $115. For chat, messaging and phone in one platform, Zendesk goes further.

Why is Zendesk so expensive?

Mostly because the price people quote is the Suite's. Support Team is ticketing only. The suite most people mean by "Zendesk" starts at $55 per agent per month. AI sits on top of the seat as well. Copilot: $50 per agent a month on annual billing, Suite Professional and up only. AI resolutions past the included ones: $1.50 each committed, $2.00 pay as you go.

Prices read from each vendor’s own pricing page on 27 September 2026, including Zendesk’s.
